Rocket League fanatics will get the chance to strut their stuff — and their custom cars — in GeekWire’s first-ever virtual sports tournament, taking place Wednesday, July 8 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. (PT).
With our favorite sporting events shut down and physical events on hold, we’re turning to Rocket League — the fast-paced hybrid soccer-car driving game — for some fun and competitive community engagement.
Eight company-sponsored teams will compete in this one-of-a-kind tournament, presented by Avalara in conjunction with our organizing partner Virtual Sports. Each team will consist of three players, navigating the twists, turns and booms of Rocket League.
A portion of the team entry fees will go toward a prize pool benefiting non-profit organizations that are part of the All In Seattle initiative. The winning team will get to choose the non-profit partner to which they’d like to donate the prize pool.
Not a Rocket League player? That’s OK, as we’re encouraging companies to support their teams and join the experience, which includes VR DJ’s, avatar shoutcasters, celebrity guests and opportunities to hang out remotely. Those who’ve loved the camaraderie and competition of the GeekWire Bash — complete with ping pong, dodgeball, robotics and more — will certainly get a kick out of this virtual experience.
Whether a participant or a spectator, it’s a fun, friendly competition for a good cause.
