Seattle is going to put on its best Hawkins, Ind., impersonation when “Stranger Things: The Experience” sets up in a warehouse in the SoDo neighborhood next month.
The immersive experience promises elements from the hit Netflix streaming series and the fictional 1980s-era town where its set, all in a 44,000-square-foot venue at 1750 Occidental Ave. S.
Visitors will be able to take part in a 50-minute interactive journey through Hawkins Lab and the Upside Down — the show’s spooky alternate reality — where they will encounter a “gauntlet of terrors lurking in the dark,” as a news release notes.
The experience will also feature Mix-Tape, a free-to-explore space decked out in the show’s shopping mall vibe, with themed food and drink, video games, merchandise, and photo ops in the living room of one of the main families on the show, the Byers.
Season one of “Stranger Things,” a sci-fi horror series now on its fourth season, premiered in July 2016.
Co-produced by Netflix and Fever, the experience has previously been to New York, San Francisco, London, Atlanta and Los Angeles. Toronto and Paris experiences launched in March.
The arrival in Seattle comes as the city has worked to attract more people back to downtown Seattle in the wake of the pandemic. Increased arts and culture options are often listed as potential drivers to get more people to visit the city.
Last month, Chicago-based art collective WNDR opened a new high-tech museum along the Seattle waterfront. The 13,000-square-foot space is an immersive, multi-sensory experience showcasing a mix of video, audio, interactive and AI-generated artwork
There’s a waitlist for the chance to purchase limited Stranger Things tickets, starting at $29 per person, and sales will open to the general public starting April 19. The language and graphic images can be a bit much for some audiences, so children under 5 will not be admitted, and anyone under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
“Stranger Things: The Experience” will be open Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
